Some of the members here have seen this before through my link to the UMM Owners Club UK, but here is a summary for those who missed it.

I acquired this UMM 2 years ago. I did not write "bought" because it was free! The previous owner offered this to anyone who would promise to restore it and not send it for scrap. The bad news was that this was situated in John O 'Groats, Scotland, which is the very furthest north that you can get in the mainland UK.

So I had to pay for it to be transported to my home 750 miles away (1200km). As you can see, it needed a lot of work, but I am now retired and I wanted a project. The intention is always to do as much of the work myself that is possible, and to keep as much of the original car as makes sense.

This is how it looked originally, as used by the first owner Tilcon Quarries. It was used to ferry the quarry workers around the site. The company had a number of these UMMs, but the drivers did not like them. They had always used Landrovers before, and did not want anything else. As is often happens in these cases, I think that they made sure that the transport manager would not buy any more. They were treated harshly and had some reliability problems.

Eventually some of the vehicles were sold to a private owner, who fixed this one (it had a broken axle), and repainted it in green. Then he sold it on to someone else. After a few more adventures and some modifications! it came to me. My complete blog can be found on UMM-World.com if you are interested.

Olá Geoff,
desculpe estar a invadir o seu tópico, mas sabe, ou lembra se esta decoração era original na UK?

Hi Paulo,

I don't think that this was a standard decoration. The ones that I have seen have ALTER written in the stripes.

OK.
It looks very well designed, but really the opinion here, is that it will not be original of the brand.
Thank you

Today was the day to finish fitting the replacement rear springs. Much better than the old ones which were almost worn through.
IMG_20200605_163334_3.jpg

I also decided to remove the towbar mounting from the rear. I do not intend to tow anything with this car, I have another vehicle for towing.
The space underneath will be used to mount a spare wheel carrier. There is a Nissan winch that may be fitted under here to carry the spare.
I was thinking about the towbar, as I removed it. It is very strongly made, but is mounted with 4 M10 bolts! I wonder whether anyone has broken one off?

Yesterday's job was to cure a rattle in the sliding window in the driver's door. The plastic track was missing, having worn out.

I did have a spare glass that was installed in a passenger side window, so I removed the window from my door and dismantled the glass. This can be done by flexing the frame while the glass is in the centre. There is enough clearance then to release the glass from the runners in the frame.

The passenger side glass had a good plastic runner, as the passenger side does not get used as much as the drivers side. The handle on the window can be changed over to fit on the other side of the glass, by removing the two screws.

Then the whole thing was reassembled and fitted back into the car.

Hi Paulo,
Thanks for that, but I think that you have done equally as much with your UMM.
I admire your work, and you have given me some good ideas. I look at the UMMs that the guys in Portugal are restoring and I envy them because of the small amount of rust that they have.
Congratulations for getting it through the MOT test. I am looking forward to that day with mine. Once it is on the road, I will be driving around, visiting all the UK Umm owners that I now know!
