Hi!

My Alter 2.5, 4-Speed-Shift has three hand gears.

1: black - for the normal shift
2: white/yellow - for four wheel drive
3: Red - for the differentials

But why do I have to turn the switch on the front wheels from 2 to 4 position?
Is this normal?
When they are on position 2 I cannot turn on the 4-wheel-drive.

Regards!
Sebastian

Hello Sebastian!

That switch is wath makes the connection of the wheels to the front axle/diferential. If you turn on the 4x4 and not the front wheels switch, torque will be transmitted to the front axle but you won't have front traction, since the wheels are not connected to the semiaxels.

If your UMM isn't English, the hand gears will be, from left to right:
1-Gear box
2-Transfer box (normal/reduced torque)
3-4x2/4x4 traction

Hope i'd help!

This is a thing that makes a UMM more reliable, because the wheels are not conected, if they are not in use.
That´s a way of saving material... in normal 4x4 cars, the wheels are always conected, even if they are not in use, but that´s unecessary.
The inner parts of the wheels are stoped if they are not connected, in the UMM, saving the material.

You say the middle is the transfer box!?
So what is it doing?
What does it mean: normal / reduced torque?

In your UMM Sebastian, the on/off 4x4 is on the midle one and the right one is low/hi because is an Alter 1.The Alter 2 is the on/off 4x4 the right one.The gear box and the transfer gear box is not the same that in Alter2.
The switch on the front wheels is like nunumm says and save fuel too;).And because the transfer gear box is locked 50%traction front axle/50% traction right axle (when conected in 4 wheel drive mode)

1: black - for the normal shift
2: white/yellow - for four wheel drive
3: Red - for the differentials

Red - for the normal or reduced torque... Gives a lot of strenght to the UMM, to climb.
Try to conect and then drive the car... you will see that the top speed in 4th gear is around 50 km/h, but with a lot of strenght.

Sorry Sebastian for the confusion, i thought Alter I and Alter II had the same configuration. Just trying to help...
Like Nuno said, when you turn on the reduced torque you can almost climb a wall!!
To use the reduced torque you should first turn on the front wheel switch to the 4x4 position and the 4x4 inside the vehicle, so that the extra strenght can be distributed by the the two axles.
I wish you good off-road rides!
Portuguese best regards!
Pedro
