Steering Box needed again- for UMM Alter I /1986!

Hi again!

Samuel was so nice to send me a steering box (normal, not power steering), but it seems to be lost on the way from portugal to germany. (Now more than 2weeks on the run)

1. Has anyone a steering box to sell?

2. Where is the steering box from? Can I find it in an other car type?

My Alter is nearly ready to start, but a good working steering box is the last thing missing.

To reduce the noise in my Alter 1 (4Speed) I bought kilos of noise-reduction-plates. I will tell you if it helps after testing...

Try carpet for insonorization in the interior... not good for water and mud, but nice to reduce noise.

You don't needed another steering box. I was today to the post offices and had indicated that your order this in I transit and must arrive Germany fifth thursday possibly delivers during next week since as i have say to you i have send the steering box in Wednesday.

Sebastian,to help reduce the noise verify that the gap from the valves are ok.If they have gap bigger than the indicated by the manual the engine make very much noise:disappointed_relieved:

At Samuel: Ok, I will wait longer! Thank you for reply. But In every way 2 steering boxes
are better than no steering box. What does "fifth fair sera" mean?

At filipeum: I will check the valves, when the more impotant things are done. But the Alter is
very LOUD!!! After I bought it, I drove 700km home. It was horrible loud. Because
there is only metal! The 4-Speed-Gear does the rest. So I will solve this with
noise-reduction-plates and carpet.

Do you know, why the engine was build so near to the inner space and far back in the engine-room?
Better weight balance?

You're absolutly right!
The cause of the enormous noise you're listening,
comes from de metal. But I wouldn't consider it noise!
That must be the closest you can get to "HEAVY METAL"!!!
Be used to it, cause probably it won't get better!!!

I can get a new one from an UMM-Dealer in France.

But he makes me a "special-price" at nearly 500€...

That is too much for me at the moment.

So has anyone a steering box to sell at better conditions?

And in every way, this time it should be send with an insurance!

Hi mate, as Toz as said 2 u Knuth was the mate that use 2 work with me, yes the 1 i mencioned a few posts back.
U can still trying 2 fit a steering box from a Merc 190 in ur UMM, just ask with ur local mechanic, it as being put in other 4x4, so with a litlle efort and some pacience u could be able to fit it.

if i don´t get the original, i will try this with the mb-box.
I found a very "hard" mechanic. Maybe he can do it.
Servo would be fine, of course.

Mate do us a favor can u check the price 4 a 911 turbo 1994 in ur country and 4 a Audi TT coupe from 2000 the 1 that have 225 bhp aswell.

If you are Rearly interested: I live in Lübeck. In Hamburg you will find a lot. This is 60km from my location and up to my time, i could have a look. With my 1984 MB 230CE I drove to Tarifa in 2 days. Hard but possible... So if you find one, you can do it on a weekend, and the baltic sea is a nice area, too!
Good if you take a 911 turbo, but better take a carrera 4. You wont lose any money with these cars. There have a very stabile value! If you invest time & service. About the TT its not the same, but a good car too.

Hi Sebastian i went to the sites u said and found some nice dials on the 911. Thing is that sould be a xristmas present 4 my wife but sadly my tenant from UK phone saing i got 2 put a new roof on me house over ther. The 911 will have 2 wait as my UMM is waiting 4 almost 2 years 4 rebuilding.

I also think, a roof is more important. A 911 should be a second or third car. As I know now, about an UMM in Germany, it is the same. In a German Forum I met a guy, called Holger. He lives in Portugal and maybe he finds a steering box for me. Today I tested my UMM. After 4 weeks without use, the engine started suddently. So, most things are ok about my Alter, but still waiting for a good steering box.

HI,
My UMM Alter II from 1989 is using a Land Rover Discovery 200 steering box. It's the exactly the same.
